Former MLB starting pitcher, Curt Schilling, played the role of relief ace last week, with the help of his neighbors in Medfield and beyond. In the wake of Hurricane Harvey ripping through the Gulf Coast of Texas, Schilling began Operation Bullpen!, an effort to collect and transport donations to Texans in the storm’s path.

Over the week, Medfield’s Shaw’s parking lot served as the epicenter for Schilling’s relief efforts, as it played host to a trailer and countless community members who had come to help fill it.

The trailer left for Houston on Friday.

“When all is said and done,” read an informal release distributed by Schilling in advance of the drive, “we are not a nation of color, religions, races or sexes. We are a nation of Americans, which means ALL colors, ALL races, ALL religions (and non-religions), and ALL sexes. This? This sort of stuff right here? It’s what we do, it’s who we are.”
