First Parish Unitarian Universalist Church in Medfield will bring back its traditional open mic, spoken word coffeehouse on Saturday, Feb. 27. Local residents are invited to share writings, poetry, stories, songs, and more based on a common theme.

The theme for the first Expresso Yourself Coffeehouse will be “Ah, Youth!” and will feature storyteller Bruce Marcus, who won the story slam at Sharing the Fire: The Northeast Storytelling Conference and is the coordinator of the Story Space in Cambridge.

The idea behind the revival of the open mic coffeehouses came from former Medfield resident Thea Iberall, who is a member of the congregation at First Parish. Iberall is a poet and storyteller and wanted to create a space for other creative people from the region to bring their ideas out into the open.

In a press release to local media, Iberall said, “There are lots of spoken word opportunities in Boston, but only a few in the MetroWest area…We want to change that.”

The Expresso Yourself Coffeehouse will run from 7-9 p.m. in the Parish Hall on the last Saturday of each month. Each participant will have five minutes to share. High school students and adults are welcome to join in as audience members or by getting on stage.

Suggested donations for the event are $5 for adults and $3 for students and coffee and refreshments will be provided by event sponsors Brothers Marketplace and Starbucks.
