The Medfield High School varsity softball team made quick work of TVL newcomer Dedham last Tuesday afternoon at Curt Schilling Field, downing the Marauders 14-1 by slaughter rule to improve to 5-1 on the season.

Dedham got to staff ace Alana Potts in the first inning with a pair of singles before plating a run off of a fielder’s choice to grab a 1-0 lead. However, the lead was short-lived for the Marauders as Laura Clifford belted a bases-clearing double into the right-center field gap with one out in the bottom of the first to score both Katharine Corzilius and Ally Carlin, giving Medfield a 2-1 lead.

Potts found her rhythm and sent the Marauders down in order in the top of the second to preserve the 2-1 Medfield lead heading into the home half.

Senior captain Rachel Kornet began the bottom of the second with a double into the left-center field gap before a single by Potts to short right put runners at the corners with no outs. Kornet took home on a throw to second after Potts swiped the base on the first pitch of the ensuing at-bat by Maddy Mullaney, who would then reach base on an infield hit to put runners at the corners. Mary Cronin drove in Potts with a single to right field to make it a 4-1 lead for Medfield before Ally Carlin cracked a single to center to plate Cronin and push the lead to 5-1. Clifford recorded her third RBI of the day with a single to center to score Carlin from second, making it a 6-1 lead for Medfield after two innings.

Potts sent the Marauders down in order in the top of the third via a fly to right, a strikeout, and a lineout to short. Kornet drew a walk to begin the bottom of the third for Medfield and swiped a pair of bases to move to third before Potts also drew a walk to set up runners at the corners with no outs. Kornet took home on the throw to second on a stolen by Potts to make it a 7-1 edge for Medfield.

Cronin singled home Potts two at-bats later to make it an 8-1 game before Corzilius plated Cronin from third off of a bunt single, pushing the lead to eight runs at 9-1. The Warriors would add five more runs in the inning, including a two-run blast to right field off the bat of Molly Glasheen to extend the lead to 14-1. Potts shut the door in the bottom of the fourth and Medfield went on to win by the 13-run final.
