WHS senior Gabriella Heaney-Secord has won the MetroWest 3-point shootout in support of cancer research. The shootout was a fun event in which over 110 middle school and high school students came out to compete in a game they love, all while raising funds to support a worthy cause. The fundraiser is part of the Officials vs. Cancer initiative, which supports the American Cancer Society.

Over 110 middle school and high school basketball teams in MetroWest held competitions to determine their best 3-point shooter. Heaney-Secord won the honor of representing Westwood High School.

The winner of each team then competed at Hopkinton High School on Saturday, February 17. Each shooter had 45 seconds to complete a circuit of five balls at three stations around the 3-point line. Top scorers moved on to the next round.

Gabriella faced off against the top scorers from 18 other high schools in the MetroWest region, winning all four rounds, draining 13 of 15 shots to make it into the final, and then bringing home the championship for Westwood.

The entire team came out and offered its boisterous support.

Westwood Girls Hoops tweeted: “Best shooter in the gym, best fans in the stands! Gabby dominated the Officials vs. Cancer 3-point contest today winning every round to bring home the title!!”

“The most important thing was raising awareness and funds to find cures and ways to prevent this horrible disease that affects so many people," Gabriella said. "I was honored to represent my town and to have so much support from my team. And, I got to support this great cause while doing something I really love.”

While Gabriella noted that she knows many people are affected by this disease, this win was particularly meaningful to her, as her mother is currently undergoing treatment for breast cancer.

Rich Landry, an organizer of the event, reported that this was their best year so far, earning over $2,600 for the fight against cancer.
